چکیده
s of each presentation were prepared by the authors themselves. They solely reflect their point of view. The sections “discussion/issues raised”, which follow each abstract, have been drafted by the secretariat according to key issues raised and book marked as such during the final discussion, further edited by the author of the papers and submitted for final review to all participants. Activities of International Organizations (WHO, FAO, UNEP, ICGEB, OECD) related to biotechnology A first session of the seminar was dedicated to the activities of International Organization in relation with biotechnology. Representatives of the Headquarter of the World Health Organization (WHO), Food Safety Programme (FOS); of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB); of the Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) were invited to present their activity. Updated reviews of their activities are available at the following web pages: WHO/FOS: Safety of food derived from modern biotechnology page (http://www.who.int/fsf/GMfood/index.htm) FAO: FAO and CBD Biosafety Protocol page (http://www.fao.org/sd/rtdirect/rtre0034.htm) UNEP: Convention on Biological Diversity – UNEP secretariat (http://www.biodiv.org/) ICGEB: Biosafety page (http://www.icgeb.trieste.it/biosafety/) OECD: (http://www.oecd.org/subject/biotech/) Release of Genetically Modified Organisms in the Environment: is it a Health Hazard? Public Knowledge and Perceptions of Biotechnology and Genetically Modified Organisms in Iran
Biotechnology offers a variety of potential environmental, social and economic benefits but, it is the center of extreme public and political debate at present. A major field of discussion in biotechnology are genetically modified (GM) organisms. New medical, political, ethical and religious discussions arise over the production and consumption of these organisms. Many surveys have been conduct...
متن کاملToxic Chemical Release Hazard Distance Determination Using Chemical Exposure Index (CEI) in a Gas Refinery
Events leading up to the release of toxic chemicals in the processing plants are one of the main hazards of chemical industries that can endanger employees and also people in neighborhood. In this study, DOW's Chemical Exposure Index (CEI) is used to determine hazard distances of possible toxic chemical releases in one of the South Pars gas refineries. To...
متن کاملA quantitative competitor PCR assay to detect genetically modified roundup-ready soybeans in commercially sold foods in Iran
Due to ever-increasing global diffusion and related socio-economic implications, the detectionof genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is very important. In this study, we design a plasmidcontaining two genes in mutated form as construct-specific (cp4 epsps) and event-specific(pd35S). It is applied for quantitative-competitor (QC) PCR as a simple and reliable method forthe detection of GM food....
متن کاملInfluence of Matric Potential on Survival and Activity of Genetically Engineered Ralstonia eutropha H850Lr
Although the application of biodegradative genetically engineered micro organisms (GEMs) for bioremediation is very promising, the risks of their release should be assessed before their introduction into the environment. Lux-marked Ralstonia eutropha H850Lr (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus H850Lr) was introduced into sterile and non-sterile soil microcosms at matric potentials ?2.11, ?30, ?750, ...
متن کاملBiotechnology risk assessment in Australia: A molecular perspective
Biotechnology, especially the development of genetically modified crops, offers many potential economic, nutritional and environmental benefits, but equally many potential hazards and risks. Approval procedures for the release of genetically modified organisms are established under the Gene Technology Act 2000 (Cth). This article examines the methodology used to identify potential molecular ris...
